Market observation and the touchpoints that quietly decide deals

Talk is necessary. Residue is decisive. klitflempot shows how to watch demos, comparison pages, RFP templates, and competitor phrasing — then fold what you see into the claude research cadence.

What “observation” means in B2B marketing research

Observation is not mystery shopping for its own sake. It is disciplined logging of how evaluation actually unfolds: which pages get bookmarked, which security questionnaires appear first, how a sales engineer skips a feature when the buyer’s eyes glaze. klitflempot pairs observation with interviews so neither method stands alone.

Map at least three layers before calling something a journey: discovery surfaces (search, peer referral, analyst brief), evaluation surfaces (demo, POC, peer Slack), and procurement surfaces (legal, security, vendor risk). Skipping procurement observation is why many positioning decks die in week six.

Touchpoint residue worth capturing

  • Competitor phrases that appear verbatim in buyer emails.
  • Screenshots buyers send to peers — usually the only slides that matter.
  • Moments a demo stalls: loading delays, permission errors, unclear pricing.
  • Artifacts procurement requests earlier than product teams expect.

Each residue item becomes a candidate for purchase friction clustering. The claude cadence asks weekly: what did we observe that interviews never named?

Competitive language as field data

Track how rivals describe the same job. If three competitors all say “single pane of glass,” that phrase is polluted. klitflempot notes polluted phrases so positioning synthesis can choose fresher, more verifiable language — ideally lifted from buyer metaphors, not agency brainstorms.

Ethics and honesty bounds

Observe only what you are invited to see or what is public. klitflempot does not teach social engineering or deceptive access. Observation notes are generative evidence, not proof of market size. Never convert five demo watches into a “statistically representative” claim.

Observation checklist klitflempot uses in the field

Before

Define the decision window, roles present, and which artifacts you expect to see.

During

Timestamp stalls, quote freezes, and who drives the mouse versus who asks criteria questions.

After

Tag notes into friction, language, and veto buckets for insight patterns.

Turn residue into friction patterns

Observation without synthesis is just busy note-taking.
